Welcome back to Natural Language Puzzling. Let's take a look at the Sunday Puzzle from yesterday, 1/3/2021:
This week's challenge comes from listener Robert Flood of Allen, Texas. Think of a seven-letter hyphenated word for a kind of cooking. Change the middle letter to get a new word describing a kind of music. What words are these?
I will post my solution on Friday, after the Thursday deadline for submissions. I don't want Will Shortz to come break my kneecaps, after all. For now, let's do a bit of brainstorming.
A "word for a kind of cooking". It's not super clear but I'm assuming this is either a method, like grill or broil, or possibly a cuisine, like French or Turkish. It would be great if we had a long list of words like these. From there, we could eliminate any that aren't a seven-letter hyphenated word.
A "word describing a kind of music". This is probably a genre, like punk or bluegrass, or maybe it's an adjective used to describe music, like up-beat or pizzicato. Again, if we had such a list we could filter to keep only seven-letter hyphenated words.
If we had such lists, we could simply compare them pairwise until we find a pair where only the middle letter differs.
So how do we get these lists of cooking words and music words?
See you Friday with the solution (I hope)!
